This is a review of my 2017 Motobecane HAL5 27.5 full-suspension mountain bike. For my first full-suspension bike I did’t want to spend $3,000+ until I was sure of what style riding I’d focus on.
I found this on bikesdirect.com for about $1,300 and the specs seemed pretty good. I wanted a 27.5 trail bike with a 1x drivetrain. Here’s a summary of the specs:
Frame: 6061 alloy 27.5″ with 120mm travel. 4-bar rear suspension and replaceable hanger. Tapered head tube.
Fork/shock: Rock Shox recon gold 120mm fork with 32mm stanchions. Rear – Rock Shox monarch
Crankset: Sram NX 32t 175mm cranks
Derailleur: Sram NX 1x 11-42.
Rims: WTB stp i25 27.5 tubeless compatible
Hubs: non-boost with QR skewers (not a big issue for me at the time)
Tires: WTB trail boss 27.5 2.25
Brakes: Shimano hydraulic disc m365L with resin pads
Bar and stem: Ritchey 720mm wide and 90mm long
Seat post: Ritchey fixed
What I changed:
Absolute Black 32t oval chainring $68
Lycoon locking grips $8
Iberia lightweight bottle cage $10
Truvative Hussefelt 40mm stem $28
DNM dropper post 110mm $139
Tubeless setup $25
Recent tire swap to Maxxis Minion DHF and Agressor $110 total

Heya, beautiful nature! Do you plan to make more videos ? Alrighty, let me leave a sub. Have a good day! All the best, Philipp from PHAM — P.S.: Any tips for mountainbiking in that area? I’m always looking for new spots to film for my channel… 🙂
So what was the weight stock and then what was it after you upgraded?
Must get detaling on that bike
Very good straight forward review… Thank you. I’m thinking of going with the 4×4 dx 29er for first full suspension bike. 11 speed slx.. Any thoughts would be appreciated. It is a 2x not a 1x but that is ok I think. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I’ve been looking at this bike too. Would you go with the 27.5 again or the 29?
