Bike Facilities Review: Peabody Place Cycle Track

Earlier this year, a pilot Great Streets project was implemented on Peabody Place in Downtown Memphis, from Front Street to 4th Street. The street used to be a mixture of wide 2-lane with angled or parallel parking, 3-lane with parallel parking and 4-lane with no parking. Now the entire length of the street is 3-lane with center turn lane, parallel parking in some areas, and a 2-way separated cycle track along the north side of the street.

I always have reservations about 2-way separated facilities because of the inherent hazards and conflicts they possess. But I wanted to check it out for myself before passing judgement.

Verdict: looks nice, and seems okay for the casual cyclist, or for those visiting businesses in that area, but not really suitable for the serious cyclist, i.e. those riding fast, or riding for transportation. If I lived or worked in this area I would likely avoid this stretch most of the time.
