A very well made documentary by StreetFilms details the cycling culture within Tokyo and why 14% of all journeys are made by bicycle.
It begins with an urban cycling consultant’s concerns that Tokyo lacks significant dedicated cycling infrastructure for such a significant global city, I disagree that such cycling infrastructure is needed. The results speak for themselves, could they be be better, maybe, but the system works so well now.
I found cycling in Tokyo much more pleasant than cycling in Sydney. The only thing that shocked me about Tokyo was the fact that parking inspectors could simply take your bike from the street without notice and dump it in a compound if its parked in the wrong place. This can be especially surprising for non native speakers of Japanese, where in their culture it’s considered theft. But the rules are the rules and when in Rome.
Please have a look and if you’ve ridden in Tokyo let me know your experience.
